Crabapple Spring

Not quite done, actually a couple of hours to go, but I'm thrilled with it. I wasn't sure if I was going to paint the "dying" blossom with it's dryed yellow edges, but it ended up being the best part of the painting - for me. I learned a lot today. Crabapple blossoms are fun to paint and I have two really beautiful trees in my front yard.

I spent some time with my Dad today. He has spring fever wicked bad and he was trying to give it to me but I fought hard. We will see if I fought hard enough tomorrow. It's going to be around 50 degrees. (That's a warm spring day in Maine.)

This picture is reading a bit too purple. It is so frustrating to spend 15 minutes adjusting a photo just to make it close to the original. Guess I need a new camera, can't be spending all my time adjusting photos right? Actually, I usually photograph my photos outside in the same spot because it is the best lighting for accurate photos, but snow is now covering the entire area. I'm sure this is why my colors are off. So maybe, if I'm honest with my self, it's not a new camera in my future rather than a need for some shoveling. Ugh.

I found a really great farm about ten miles from my house last summer. Unfortunately, it was probably the last year they will have pigs. Luckily, I loaded up with reference photos of these cute little guys. You either love them or not, but you have to admit that they are full of character. I really enjoyed watching them waddle around without a care and plunk themselves down in a mud puddle. They look like they are smiling most of the time too. I can't wait for spring already. Maybe they will decide to have pigs again and I will get there early enough to see them when they are babies! Oooh, babies have even more character!

I'm thinking about having my very own chicken coop this spring. It would be fun to paint them anytime I want. Actually, it would be nice to not have to infiltrate random chicken farms throughout the summer too. Sometimes I feel a bit weird trying to get photos of farm animals. I like to ask the farmers first and almost always they are pleased to let me take as many photos as I like, but there is always a moment when I can sense them wondering what kind of painting I'm going to do. Like, "Doesn't she know they aren't "pets"?." One time I was taking photos of milk cows and the farmer hurridly past me by and said "Those aren't horses you know." He he, I love my job.

I'm working on some 6"x6" paintings so that I'll have new paintings to post more regularly. I've been neglecting my blogging duties, which actually gives me some anxiety. I love all my followers, thank you for your feedback!
This girl was calling to me as I quickly drove by late last fall. I can still remember how fast my heart was beating as I turned my car around to get some photos before the light changed. One of those moments we artist live for, true inspiration. I can't wait to visit there again in the spring!

This is a commission I worked on for Christmas. I have plans to work on many "tree" paintings for 2012. I hope to evolve throughout the process so that they don't become redundant. I actually haven't painted much in the past 3 weeks because we had a wonderful house guest that I spent all my time with. But, the party is over and it's definitely time to get back to work!

It is 84 degrees outside in Monmouth, Maine. A good day for taking tree photos. Stocking up for the winter. I'll be in Bar Harbor tomorrow, picking up some paintings and soaking up the last of the warm weather. I hate to see it go, but bring on the foliage!

This is a farm just up the road a ways from my house that sits up on a hill. If it is near sunset, I always take this road home because it is such a treat to see the sun filtering through their garden, trees, chicken coop and field. It is one of those special places that would make me want to paint even if I wasn't a painter.

I really feel most comfortable painting the peonies. You know what I mean, like some people favor painting landscapes or still lifes. Blue shadows are so exciting for me. I love all the different blues and I hope to put them all in this one!

Not done. I have been working so much later in the day that none of my photos are very good. I have been meaning to post for the past three days but I'm starting to notice all the "not done" photos and it makes me a bit nervous. I don't know if other people see the painting's potential in the unfinished state, it could be just a bad representation of the final piece. I hope not, my intention is to have you see the painting in progress, just as you would if you visited my studio. I hope you will like the final pieces when I start posting them next month. For now I'm just diving into every single project I have on the table, getting the important stuff on the canvas and then moving on.

I think I will "mellow-out" those strong shadows, but I like it. I'm feeling a bit more confident today. For about a month I have been listening to tv shows while I work, yesterday and today I went back to listening to my ipod. I just figured out how important music is - the inspiration is crucial for me to paint at my best. This was a winning play list for me: Jimi Hendrix, who was the most creative and expressive man. Bob Marley who was a such sweet soul, and Metallica which makes you feel like you can kick ass. I love all music, but mostly the stuff that makes you feel something, which is how I intend my art to be.

I'm not a rainy day type of person, but my father has always loved rainy days. He said it reminds him of when he was a kid and would play and have so much fun in puddles. I guess I just don't have any fond memories other than walking 1 mile to school and being wet and cold for the first hour or so of classes. Although, I do love shining pavement, all the colors of gray in the sky, thick atmosphere. Maybe I do love rainy days too (from the warmth of my home or my car!).

This is one of the portraits that I worked on in December, that I couldn't show you because it was a gift. I'm always so excited to work on portraits when the subject matter is great to begin with. These two ladies are beautiful and I was thrilled with the composition too.
I'm back in the studio full-time now. I took a bit of an un-planned mini break, for reasons I'm not even sure of. But I have big plans for the 2011 body of work and I'm ready to get to it. Thank you to all my supporters that are still checking in even though I temporarily abandoned you . You know I love you all and I can't wait to start posting new pictures for you again!

It's coming along. I've definitely decided that my next painting will be a more manageable size though. The hours are really adding up on this one, which is fine, but I need some new paintings in the studio to inspire me and help me to chart out exactly I want my 2011 body of work to be. I've got lots of ideas. Color, as always will be one of my main focuses along with evoking certain emotions from the viewer. I want to make the paintings hard to ignore. I usually lean on color to achieve this but I would like to make the paintings connect with the viewer in a deeper way this time too. Well, maybe I should have shared that after they were painted rather than before I even take on this task! I guess I am feeling more comfortable with bringing you all along with me through my successes and failures. It is what it is - really. Me.

A lot of the little stuff doesn't show up well in these little photos, but it's there and it's what I spend the majority of time on. I don't like messy looking brush strokes. I've been doing a lot of "loose end tying" for the past few days. Packaging and shipping stuff, cleaning the studio, paperwork, basically all the stuff that I have been neglecting. I have to admit failure sometimes. I didn't realize the flaws with this painting until I was basically done. It is the last of the small paintings for the book. I decided to add it in because it represents where I am as an artist right now. Still having off days - days that are so valuable to my artistic growth. It seems as though you just learn more from your mistakes... the yolks are way too big. :) I guess I was so anxious to get to putting these colors onto the canvas. Oh well. I still like the colors. The next painting is sure to be absolutely proportionally correct!

I am so excited about my new book that is coming out mid-October. It is a collection of 50 6"x6" paintings that I have done in the last year. It will be available to order here and on my website. The images above are a few examples of what the book will feature. It should be a fun little book for my supporters to have - especially those who own some of these little paintings. I already have plans to do a second book of "trees" and my large paintings. So I'll keep you posted!

My Uncle Rusty grew these peppers in his garden. I had my husband taste one of them and it made him run for the fridge. I guess they are as hot as they look. ;)

I couldn't resist this eggplant from the farm stand. They are such a beautiful color. The farmer asked me how I was going to cook it and I said that I hadn't thought about it because I was buying it to paint later. He said "Wow, some other artist just came a half an hour ago and bought three big eggplants to paint too. You find something inspirational in these?" Huh. It surprised me that HE didn't find them inspirational or beautiful. He did tell me to fry it like a zucchini - which was good. It makes me happy that I am fortunate enough see the beauty in ordinary things. I think I will give him this painting. :)

I went to an antique shop with my Mom last week and I was soooo attracted to a section of the store that displayed about 300 different bottles. The Moxie bottle was awesome color but is also a drink that is made in Maine. This is one of the original bottles. I thought it was a good find to add to my collection of things to paint this winter.

I've bottled up the sunlight to keep with me now that summer is coming to an end. So sad to see it go but I'm looking forward to the changing trees! The tree (below) is almost done. I'll work on the highlights this weekend between shopping trips. Hope you have a great weekend too!

I am going to need to put in a lot of highlights. This is a tree that I have painted before. It was orange last time. Funny how I have my favorite trees in the area that I go back to again and again. They feel like old friends and it's so nice to visit.

I didn't finish today, but I probably will this weekend. Sorry for the glare on the photo. Whenever I take photos in the studio they are always a little off in one way or another. I have been working on all the small daily paintings for awhile and I didn't realize how much I missed working on these large canvases. There really isn't enough time in the days or weeks to paint all the paintings I have in mind!
